One of the greatest moments in any young musician's development is the first time they learn and perform a solo piece. Performing solos helps to build self-esteem, self confidence, teaches us a great deal about the art of music, and allows us the opportunity to stand up and say "this is how I feel about music." It is often the first time that the young musician has the opportunity to make their own musical decisions, and to interpret music based on their own feelings.

Norman Bolter, composer of many striking and meaningful musical works for the trombone, has written this work, The Joy In Being Able, specifically for the younger trombonist. This piece is available only here in the "Practice Room" section of the OTJ.

Don't be fooled, however. This is not an easy piece! Mr. Bolter has penned a work that can challenge players of all ages, either musically or technically. We encourage you to download this wonderful solo and play it. If you make an exceptional recording of the piece please consider sending us an MP3 of the performance. We will post the best ones here for others to hear

Although there is a practice MP3 of the accompaniment, don't miss out on the joy of playing this wonderful piece with another musician.
