My measurements of 20+ slides has indicated the following trends: 1) The clearance between the stocking and the ID of the outer slide is on the order of 8 thousandths of an inch although one was as small as 3 and the largest was 14. Measuring the ID of the outer slide is not a solid thing as I can only reach the first 4 inches with my telescoping gage. My plug gages are in 2 thousandth steps so this is not much help either; perhaps I will have some additional pieces made to fill in with 1 thousandth steps in certain zones. 2) The difference in diameters between the stocking and the rest of the inner tube is on the order of 8-10 thousandths. The smallest was 5 and the largest was 16. I would be interested in any information that members of the list might have on this subject. Thanks to those of you who got back to me on this. My third or fourth search turned up a listing at Hickeys, and I don't know why I didn't think of that right away. I hope they can get it for me. For those of you who haven't checked out Hal's playing, I can't recommend him highly enough. I think his playing transcends all of the standard modern jazz trombone "tricks". He is technically brilliant, harmonically inventive, soulful, and utterly unafraid to take chances. His approach seems to me to be the logical continuation of the development of the jazz language....he is able to refer to the past without being stuck in it. Some cd's to check out: As leader: Only Human (aaarghhh......I need to get this back!!!!!) Narayani (quartet with guitarist Joe Diorio) ....this is another -great- album Hero Worship......on this one he uses this 5-voice harmonizer, and I have to say that I'm not really into it, although the playing is still unbelievable with Phil Woods: All Bird's Children.....this was my introduction to Hal's playing....another incredible cd, very highly recommended Full House....live recording, same band, more stretching out on the solos Hal has also recorded with Jerry Bergonzi, but I haven't heard those records. I'd really like to. Also check out his books, How to Improvise and Ready, Aim, Improvise.....excellent exercises and sage advice. How to Comp also looks good, but I don't have it. Maybe I'm way off-base and over the top in my enthusiasm here....dissenting viewpoints welcome. Someone please explain to me why Hal isn't a trombone hero on the order of Conrad Herwig, Steve Davis (both players that I also really dig, don't get me wrong), or any of the other usual (modern) suspects.
