I forgot to list two others who made an impression on me while I was in HS....in Jazz band. We had many different soloists come in. Dominic Spera on trumpet, Chuck Howard on trombone (whose band does a great tribute to Buddy Morrow.) We had a full horn section to include saxes who doubled all the woodwinds, trumpets, trombones and horns. If there wasn't a part in the book, Dr. Contorno would write one. So I should say Stan Kenton also had a big impression on me. Chuck never gave lessons but I do have a set of papers somewhere about his ideas of playing, especially, Jazz. He did play duets. We played alot out ot the Tommy Pederson books. I took private bass bone lesson between ('78 - '71) from a freelance trombonist with the Milwaukee Symphony who lived in Waukesha.. Since there was a long backorder, he graciously lent me his Bordogni (Rochut for Bass Bone). It had all these markings in the book, and they were usually the opposite of what I was instructed to play by my teacher. So in all of my HS wisdom, I ERASED them one day when I was practicing. Next lesson, I found out those "marks" had been from one of his teachers....Edward Kleinhammer of the Chicage Symphony. Somehow, I could never make myself go back after that. I can laugh now but I was mortified then. The teacher had never mentioned that the writing was in there for a purpose, but I still felt about two inches tall at the time. Can't believe I skipped over these... But now I will let our other listmembers share as they come back from their vacations. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Dec 2002 10:09:09 -0500 From: Steve Beck Subject: Re: Musical Influences-a little more. My bass bone lessons were between '78 and ** '81**... and the saxes always impressed me because they could double flute, clarinet, basoon, etc. They never tried to take over the group...at least to my knowledge. I'm sure this messages isn't nearly as fun as the last one I mis-typed! So Tom, I really didn't take lessons in reverse though I often type in reveresed numbers and letters. And Steve, I can never prove that I am as old as I say I am. A year ago last summer I went to my 20th HS reunion. I tried to tell everyone there I was 191 years old, and can you believe they didn't take me seriously?!!!? LOL At least when I go out to teach, I can claim lots of experience in music and patience by taking lessons for 191 years....ha ha. Can't wait to hear other fractured fairy tales out of this one! Be careful, folks, this could happen to you if you are a casual typist such as myself. ;op :o) Smiles, Chris Ann ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Dec 2002 15:52:51 -0500 From: Bill Redgate Subject: Bach 42BGO I may have an opportunity and reason to purchase a used but extremely well maintained 42 BGO. I know the guy who has owned it since new and he is fastidious about his horns, so , as used horns go, I'm not terribly worried about getting stuck. Also, I have played the horn and it is sweet. I used it for an orchestra gig last year - two rehearsals and a performance. So why am I bothering the list, you ask? To be honest, I haven't a clue how much this horn ought to sell for. Any ideas? I would appreciate any input. The "Ebay Search" method of horn pricing - which I don't like - shows a few running in around 800 or 900. I solicit any and all comments - yes even scatological. Thanks in advance. I appreciate y'all. Bill Redgate Atlanta Georgia ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Dec 2002 15:53:43 -0600 From: "D.J. If the horn is in good shape and you know it plays good, $800-1000 (US) isn't too much. A new one will run $1500-1600 if you get a really good deal, or maybe more. List price would be about $2600 with the gold brass bell. Offer the guy $800, it's probably more than he paid for it new. Do you still have that horn? I might buy it back. As far as the 42BGO Bill is asking about. I would pay as much as $1000-1200 for one that I had played and liked, and that I knew its history.
