The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side. -- Hunter S. Thompson Gabe ===== If I had a time machine, I would murmur the same tune incessantly around Francis Scott Key for a whole week; then return to the present in time to watch the President face the flag, place his hand over his heart, and solemnly sing "It's Raining Men," backed by 100 Marines. -- Andy Ihnatko __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? To those of you who do not have the digest, it probably doesn't matter. But this format is much better for me. Before, I got the digest as an attachment of sometimes 50 messages. I had to open and close each attachment and if I wanted to go back to one it was a guessing game as to which one was which when they were all named, say, "Re: 2B, etc". I much prefer getting one email with all the day's posts in it. Mr LM, I will be leaving for 3 weeks one week from today, so if you could get the list of commands for "postpone" and "resume" out this week, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for all your time and effort into making this list run smoothly. I, and I am sure ALL of the listers, greatly appreciate your service (and are darn glad that WE are not doing it!) I suggest we all e mail you a Guinness for your hard work ;^) Trombone content: thanks to all for the info on the Conn 40H. I found out it was made in 1925 and is the "ballroom" model and would benefit from a counterweight. It is a very pretty sounding instrument in terrific condition. About the B & S bass trombone--I found out that if you order the VMI bass trombone (Bb/F/G/Eb with a longer Gb slide for D tuning) from WW & BW, you get the German-made B & S which is basically a clone of a heavy wall yellow brass Bach 50B02 (inline valves). It's finally a reality after a year and a half auditioning the work of more artists than I can count. I have contracted with professional artist/cartoonist, Todd Pearl, for a brand new image created expressly for the enjoyment of trombonists. You may use it for T-shirts, clocks, Frisbees, posters, hats, bags, cups, ceramic tiles, mouse pads, etc., etc. Interested in an outstanding image depicting the "bodacious bone" at the evolving pinnacle of instrumental music superiority? Take a look, laugh, show your pride. Enjoy your superiority as a trombonist! May the head-bangers, gut-pluckers, and button-pushers sink into the oblivion of primordial ooze! Hello all: After all the buzz recently about David Gibson and his solo release, MAYA, I was fortunate to spend some time with him this past Sunday evening as he played a couple of sets here in Rochester. The venue was Monty's Korner... a quaint little tap room in Rochester's East End cultural district. (As an aside... I found myself thoroughly enjoying a brew called "Doggie Style Pale Ale". OH BOY! The fun one could have with that one!!!) Dave was joined by Bob Sneider on guitar, Danny Vitale on bass, and Mike Melito on drums. Definitely three of the finest rhythm players that currently work the Rochester scene. I was also privledged to share my table with Dave's daughter Maya, for whom his record is named. She's a little bundle of fire, and very appreciative of her Dad's profession. Working TOTALLY acoustically... no PA support at all, in this small room, it was a pleasure to hear all the little subtleties that Dave and his cast of supporters put out. I have always admired Dave's playing, going back to his grad school days here at Eastman. His time in New York has served him well, as his expressive nature and sensual sound have matured and blossomed these past few years. Dave has a quote that I've seen several times: "Music is a language, and I have something to say." Sunday evening, he said it loud and clear! Most impressive to me of Dave's playing is that while he has the pyrotechnic ability to rip the plating off of the slide, he seldom uses it. He saves it for when it is most appropriate to his message, preferring to let the simplicity of his melodic soloing convey his thoughts. Dave is a decidedly melodic soloist, crafting lines that one will find themselves humming later on and not knowing where they got it from. For the "equipment heads" out there, he plays an old KING 4B, straight, no F attachment, with a HUGE Marcinkiewicz mouthpiece... size unknown. This set-up makes for a truly marvelous sound that is both warm and sultry during ballads, and brilliant, almost "in your face" when it's time to hit the gas and lay down some be-bop. The tonal color palette that Dave employs is about as broad as I've ever heard, and makes for an interesting evening as one listens to the ever changing spectrum he uses. While I might be biased due to my friendship with him, I'm certain that his playing will appeal to even the most critical listeners. Do yourself a favor and pick up MAYA. It hasn't left my CD changer since I got it! Additionally, if you get the chance to experience Dave's playing live, DO NOT MISS IT! You'll find him to be a joy to listen to, and a very humble, approachable person as well. While talking to a friend who teaches in the SUNY system, he told me that he had Dave in as a guest artist this past year and it was one of the best things he's done in his tenure. He said that Dave is a marvelous clinician and his students came away from Dave's visit with a new enthusiasm and attitude towards their ensemble experiences. Well... I've typed about 4 times as much as I had intended, but as I read this post over, I needed to say what I have. Hopefully... you're still reading and interested.
