The university's proposal was rejected by the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission - almost a year after it was announced in conjunction with the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada. I believe this is the 22nd edition of The Four Freshmen, and if you get a chance, check out this edition of the "Fresh". Since I am probably classified as a "senior citizen", I have been a 4 Freshmen fan, since about the time I was in high school (1958-60). This is one of the best groups of 4 Freshmen I have seen in the past ten or so years. They are really strong in the vocal department. Being a trombone player, I did find the new group very light in the trombone area. I really miss founding trombonist, Bob Flannigan, and his most capable replacement, Kevin Stout (Kevin could out Watrous-Bill Watrous!!). Bob Flannigan's sassy trombone playing convinced a young, high school tuba player (me) to take up the trombone in the late 1950's. I just loved Bob's brassy, sliding trombone style! Also wanted to share with the list members what a treat the Dayton Jazz Orchestra had with altoist, Phil Woods, last Wednesday evening. What a musician this guy is! He is another musician I have idolized, since I purchased Bill Pott's great album, "The Jazz Style of Porgy & Bess", way back in the early 1960's. I believe Phil Woods and Gene Quill were both on altos on this recording. At around the age of 70, Phil Woods doesn't know the meaning of the word--senior citizen! I think his metronome does not have tempos on it slower than MM=200 Have a great weekend, everyone. Greg is an outstanding musician and a very approachable and friendly guy. The entire group played superbly. I would recommend grabbing Greg's CD "and into the light." I picked it up tonight, and made it through the first few tracks on my way home. Good stuff! Check him out whenever you get a chance.
