Leading the New Art Orchestra, Brookmeyer presides over a radiant, rambunctious big band in shrewdly conceived compositions. One marvels at the momentum and rhythmic drive he brings to the finale of "Seesaw," the puckishness and harmonic astringency of "Child at Play," and the sublime colors and ethereal tone he sustains in "For Maria." Here is the rare large-ensemble jazz recording in which everything works, from the originality of the compositions and the high craft of the arrangements to the thorough musicianship and technical elan of the players. Brookmeyer packs so much musical information into every cut that multiple hearings are required to savor the detail of his work. I haven't seen anybody actually talk about the "how to" of the job. After the valve is disassembled, it is critical to get the two round flat surfaces very clean, as this is where most of the drag tends to occur. Save your used toothbrushes. They are perfect for the job. On my valves, I see a little brass oxidation on the brass part of the assembly. A drop or two of Wright's and some gentle work with the toothbrush makes the surface nice and smooth without risking significant metal loss. A Q-tip with a drop of lubricant can clean the hole the spindle passes through. Naturally this job is easier if you do it rather frequently -- before the valve develops sluggishness. I find that after a thorough cleaning, I can apply a few drops of Binak and the valve will be just fine for 6 weeks, but I try to clean it every 4 weeks just to be sure. No lubrication necessary between cleaning when you use Binak. I use the original Binak formula. Its viscosity may be a little heavier than Al Cass and therefore make the valve slightly slower. It is OK for my needs, but I'd be curious about the results with the newer Binak Pro formula. That's what works for me. Both CD's are just plain good, straight-forward jazz and ensemble work. I don't think I've ever appeciated Carl Fontana or Slide Hampton as much as I do on these CD's. Barnes & Noble also have a lot more good jazz CD's in the $3.99 category. Another one I bought is entitled "Newport Jazz Festival All-Stars, with Scott Hamilton, Slam Stewart, Warren Vache and more. (I currently play recorder, all sizes.) Due to the sackbut's relative obscurity and the paucity of true sackbut teachers, I infer that the logical course to follow is to begin learning the trombone. My son will be playing trombone in his grade school band for a second year beginning this fall. We recently purchased his rental Amati tenor trombone. So, I have an Amati Kraslice ASL 312 to begin learning with. (He doesn't mind my borrowing "his" instrument, since he has greater interest in the guitar anyway.) If things go well, I anticipate acquiring a true sackbut maybe by the end of the year. I will have more specific questions as I go along, but for now I am asking for some general advice. I want to play early music on sackbut as soon as possible. I am nearly 50, and time is running out on me. (I have hand issues that cause me concern about my finger dexterity as I approach "old age".) I respect but don't really love jazz music, so no offense--I don't want to spend much if any time learning the jazz trombone repertoire. I will gladly learn the classical trombone reportoire, but mainly as a segue to early music. Renaissance band music--yeah, that's what I love! So, any words of wisdom for this left-handed, 49-year old sackbut player wannabe? I do have one specific question at the moment: I imagine that there is a commercial instructional CD for beginning trombone players, right? (Of course, I need to begin study with a live teacher as soon as possible.) On this CD, there would be a section demonstrating the most basic elements and technique. I don't mean just passages or entire short "standard" pieces, but things like individual notes and effects (legato, staccato, glissando, etc.) for the beginner to play alongside and imitate. Thanks for any replies.
